There is no shortage of incredible stories from Dorothy’s life living in the wilderness. None are more relatable than making a meal and sharing it with others. Dorothy would often exchange a pot-roast meal for the effort of bringing supplies or mail from town, and took advantage of seasonal foods she foraged including fiddle head fern and blueberries in addition to the bountiful fish from Knife and surrounding lakes.

A new mini-exhibit, Dorothy’s Kitchen in the Museum’s Winter Cabin features recipes that Dorothy made to create a full meal. We invite you to try these recipes and #CookLikeDorothy while sharing your progress and final dish(es) with us!

Dorothy’s Kitchen was researched and developed by 2025 Small Museum Management Intern Danni Hurley and funded in-part through sustaining support from Potluck Kitchenware, an Ely-based small business offering an extensive selection of cookware and bakeware, along with unique gifts in historic downtown Ely.
