Is the Museum open?
At this time, the Dorothy Molter Museum is OPEN and SAFE.
The proximity of the Camp Fire 8 miles northeast of Ely has triggered initial proactive stages of our Wildfire Response Plan. At this time, we are moving collection archives, objects and photographs stored in our Museum office that are not on exhibit to our off-site storage location. This proactive measure does not affect the visitor experience and is out of an abundance of caution.
What is affecting the visitor experience?
Very poor air quality due to the regional wildfires. We recommend wearing a mask when outdoors. To stay up-to-date on current conditions, visit the MN Pollution Control Air Quality hub.
Extreme heat. Although this is predicted to improve, the historic cabins are not climate controlled.
What would cause the Museum to close to the public?
Per the Museum’s Wildfire Evacuation Plan, it would close if it were in any one of three zone statuses: Ready Set or Go. This system is in place to prepare and alert people to the current urgency of the situation. The Museum is not currently in one of these zones.
For more information on this zone system or the current zone status in and around Ely, please visit the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management Map Hub with the button below.
